Role played by the students of the University of Medical Sciences of Cienfuegos in the impact tasks against COVID-19

ABSTRACT

Introduction: the new reality that Cuba faced with the COVID-19 pandemic demanded the incorporation of students into active research as the main form of confrontation; however, the growing numbers of cases changed the reality of the student body that makes up the ranks of the army of white coats, which determined their incorporation to other tasks. Objective: to characterize the role played by the students of the University of Medical Sciences of Cienfuegos in the impact tasks against COVID-19. Methods: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in the period from February to September 2021. The universe was made up of 1,353 students and all of them were worked on. It used the descriptive statistic. Results: the female sex stood out (76.27%), with a predominance of the age group from 18 to 21 years (943). The Medicine career was represented by 1,067 students (78.86%) and the first year with 367 (27.12%). 929 students were found without assistantship and without integrating any student movement. The active research was developed by 888 students (65.63%); the health area was the place with the highest student participation (82.26%). Conclusions: the participation of students in impact tasks in the province of Cienfuegos made it possible to reverse the complex situation that the province went through. The young people from the Medical Sciences were protagonists and echoed in each scenario, although research represented the most frequent activity, developed in the health areas.
