ABSTRACT

Introduction: Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a benign proliferation in the synovial membrane of joints, bursae and tendon sheaths, accompanied by hemosiderin deposits. The knee is the most commonly affected joint. Magnetic resonance and arthroscopy are useful to make the diagnosis, but the anatomopathological study confirms it.
Objective: To present a case of pigmented villonodular synovitis treated by arthroscopy.
Case presentation: The case is presented of a 70-year-old female patient who came for consultation due to pain and swelling of the right knee of four months of evolution. The presumptive diagnosis and treatment of pigmented villonodular synovitis was made by arthroscopy. Synovial biopsy confirmed the suspicion.
Conclusions: Arthroscopy is a safe and effective tool for the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to pigmented villonodular synovitis. It enables biopsy associated with a low incidence of complications.
