ABSTRACT
Introduction: tetanus is a serious disease, but rare in developed countries. We present a case of tetanus in a Mexican patient with an incomplete vaccination schedule. Case description: seven-year-old female, who did not have complete vaccination due to her parents' ideology. She developed tetanus after trauma to her left leg. The clinical picture was initially localized, which progressed to be generalized, with opisthotonos, sardonic laughter and trismus. Management was with sedation, mechanical ventilation, magnesium sulfate, muscle relaxants, systemic antimicrobial treatment, and application of tetanus toxoid. Remission of the muscle spasms was after 24 days, and she was discharged for outpatient management with rehabilitation, psychological support, and nutrition. Conclusions: this case highlights the need to complete universal vaccination schedules, to avoid preventable diseases, such as tetanus.REFERENCES
