ABSTRACT

Pain is a very prevalent symptom in hospitalized patients; however, it is frequently underestimated, particularly in children and adolescents. When pain control is achieved, patients reduce their morbidity, facilitate recovery, and improve their quality of life. In the pediatric age, the evaluation and management of pain is a challenge for health professionals, because these patients are in a stage of development and there is difficulty in measuring pain. In the hospital setting, the evaluation, registration, treatment and monitoring of patients with pain are of great relevance. With the aim of improving the diagnosis and treatment of pain in pediatric patients, this review addresses information on the classification, physiology, epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of pain.
