Student perception of distance learning in times of COVID-19

ABSTRACT

Background: social isolation implied the use of distance learning in higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Objective: to characterize distance learning from the perspective of the students of the Bachelor's degree in Clinical Bio analysis, and short cycle higher technician in Clinical Analysis and Transfusion Medicine of the Faculty of Health Technology - Nursing in Villa Clara in the first semester of the 2020-2021 academic year.
Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in which theoretical methods were applied: analysis-synthesis and inductive-deductive; empirical ones: questionnaire with ten closed questions and two open ones, online; and mathematical-statistical for data processing.
Results: it was found that the students live mainly in the municipal capitals. Most of them communicated through mobile phones; although only one student had a digital connection in her residence. They used more 4G technology, mobile data and WhatsApp. Few students rated the connection as good. Most reported preferring face-to-face education and were dissatisfied with the absence of practice in their profiles and of the teacher to clarify doubts.
Conclusions: the students' vision of distance learning in times of pandemic was characterized. It is urgent to draw pertinent strategies to improve the referred insufficiencies and a didactic to face new contingencies.
