The clinical method in times of COVID-19

ABSTRACT

Introduction: COVID-19 disease requires a comprehensive approach to medical care. The clinical method provides the appropriate tools to prioritize the process of diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients.
Objective: to deepen the use of the clinical method during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: A systematic bibliographic review was carried out to develop a reflexive critical analysis of the content of documents. The search was carried out in the SciELO, academic Google, and Pubmed databases from October 2021 to January 2022; the keywords used were: methods, clinical medicine, coronavirus, SARS‐CoV‐2, new coronavirus 2019. After identifying the preselected studies, 25 were selected and the most important contents were taken.
Results: the intelligent use of the clinical method during times of contingency and the use of auxiliary aids have a decisive role in medical diagnosis, they are able to provide evidence beyond the normal sensitivity of the examiner. Various factors hinder the process: the breakdown of the doctor-patient relationship, the underestimation of the value of the questioning, the physical examination and the irrational use of technology to reach the diagnosis.
Conclusions: it was found that the clinical method constitutes a safe tool for the individual and community management of diseases, applying the experience of work teams and individualized clinical management, the skills developed and the knowledge acquired with the aim of guaranteeing accessibility rapid and effective comprehensive care for each patient.
