ABSTRACT
Obesity is a complex, relapsing disease of multifactorial origin. Physical activity is determinant for the modification of physical condition, which can be defined as the capacity of an individual to complete daily activities and functions without experiencing pain or excessive fatigue. For a proper prescription of active play or exercise the following principles should be applied: personalized (taking into account the age, gender, mental state, social and physical level of the children or adolescents), structured (SMART approach to set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-based objectives), systematic (the difficulty and load of the motor tasks or training are ordered from easiest to most difficult) and regular (the exercise session will be completed on a certain day and time of the week). Health personnel caring for pediatric population living with obesity should encourage and empower children and their families to avoid a sedentary lifestyle (immobilized for more than one continuous hour or sitting for long periods) and increase their level of activities by accumulating at least 180 minutes a day of play or various types of effective physical activity, where the intensity will be modified according to age.
