Effectiveness of a rehabilitation program in patients recovered from critical COVID-19

ABSTRACT

Introduction: the muscular strength and physical function in patients without previous disability, who recover from critical coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), have been poorly studied. The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of a rehabilitation program through grip strength and the SF-36 questionnaire. Material and methods: a prospective, longitudinal, observational, quasi-experimental study was performed in patients recovered from critical COVID-19. Grip strength and physical function were assessed using the SF-36 questionnaire and hand dynamometry before and after these patients received a physical rehabilitation program. Results: a total of 32 patients recovered from critical COVID-19 were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 51.75 ± 11.86 and 53% of these were female. The dynamometry results revealed that males started with 19.18 ± 8.77 and at the culmination of rehabilitation reached a value of 26.46 ± 9.54 (p < 0.009). On the other hand, women before rehabilitation obtained 24.96 ± 9.97 and after rehabilitation achieved a value of 32.37 ± 6.58 (p < 0.050). The Spearman correlation value between hand dynamometry values and physical function was positive (r = 0.528, p < 0.005). Conclusions: taken together, our results suggest that patients recovered from critical COVID-19 improved hand grip and functionality after receiving a rehabilitation program.
