ABSTRACT

Introduction: Dental impaction is defined as the failure of an eruptive process that is intervened by some factor that can be physical or dental malposition. Objective: The objective was to determine the prevalence of impacted permanent second molars related to gender in patients between 12 and 30 years of age who attended a radiology center in the city of Veracruz.
Methodology: 499 panoramic radiographs from December 2021 to May 2023 of both sexes were analyzed, collecting data by age, gender and presence or absence of impacted second molars and analyzed in SPSS.
Results: The prevalence of impacted permanent second molars was found to be 14.2% (71), with a higher prevalence of 58% (41) in females and 42% (30) in males. Impaction was more frequent in the mandible with 14.6% (73), presenting 40.8% (29) in men and 61.9% (44) in women. In the maxilla the highest prevalence was 4.2% (21) of impaction, 67% (14) in men and 33% (7) in women.
Conclusion: The prevalence of impacted permanent second molars was 14.2%, with a higher frequency in females. The prevalence of impacted permanent second molars was found to be higher in the mandible than in the maxilla.
