ABSTRACT

Abdominal trauma from a firearm projectile is a frequent cause of disability and death, which is why it represents a great challenge for surgeons in the emergency department. In this work, we describe a rare case of abdominal trauma with temporary cavitation effect, and review the relevant literature. A 45-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the abdomen presented at the "Dr. Aurelio Valdivieso" General Hospital in Oaxaca, Mexico, and was transferred by pre-hospital care elements to the emergency department where a primary evaluation was performed; it allowed the identification of a single injury, in the right hypochondrium with characteristics of injury produced by temporary cavitation caused by a Firearm Projectile. With this case report we hope to increase knowledge about the phenomenon of temporary cavitation to establish effective and timely diagnoses and treatment.
