Giant myxoma of the right atrium with obstructive signs of the tricuspid valve

ABSTRACT

Cardiac primary tumors manifest with a fairly low incidence, between 0.001 % and 0.03 % in autopsy series. Myxomas are frequently located in the atria; 15 % inside the right atrium. The clinical presentation of myxoma is related to its potential to cause obstruction. We report the case of a 65-year-old male patient who, two months prior to the definitive diagnosis, went to his health area with "pain in the pit of the stomach" and subsequent "shortness of breath" of moderate intensity, related to the light stress onset and deterioration. The transthoracic echocardiogram reported a large echogenic mass in the right atrium of 80 x 37 mm. An 9x4.5 cm excision was performed, with a base set between the sinus venosus and the inferior vena cava. The diagnosis of myxoma was confirmed by histology.
