ABSTRACT

Objective. To know the frequency of intestinal parasites and the associated factors in the infection in children attending in an outpatient clinic from a children hospital.
Material and methods. It was a cross-sectional study in 429 children aged 6-36 months, performing in a single stool exam. The children’s mothers provided sociodemographic and economic information. With the application of logistic regression were analyzed three models to determine the relationship between sociodemographic and environmental factors with the presence of any intestinal parasites, amoebiasis and giardiasis.
Results. The frequency of parasites was 31.2%. Most of the parasites were caused by protozoan; the predominant specie was Entamoeba histolytica. The factors associated with the parasites infection were the family income and the presence of a refrigerator at home. For the amoebiasis the factors were the children age and the family income. Factors associated with giardiasis were age and the construction of the house walls.
Conclusions. We confirmed that the socioeconomical conditions and an inadequate home are related to the risk for intestinal parasites in the children seen in our outpatient clinic. It is important to consider the protozoans prevalence in programs that target preventing intestinal parasites.
