Allergic conjunctivitis prevalence in school children

ABSTRACT
Objective. To calculate the prevalence of the allergic conjunctivitis in children and the number of diagnosis done by doctors.Material and methods. A survey was done in 4,530 scholars and 5,040 teenagers about the frequency of symptoms for allergic conjunctivitis and the diagnosis about this illness done by doctors in the last 12 months.
Results. The symptoms of this illness were reported in 333 (6.6%) teenagers and 150 (3.3%) school children. On the other hand, the diagnosis of this illness was done in 131 (2.6%) teenagers and 50 (1.1%) children. In the teenagers the ratio clinical manifestations medical diagnosis, in children it was 2.5:1 and 3:1 in teenagers.
Conclusions. There is a high prevalence of allergic conjunctivitis in the city, particularly in teenagers and this rate is higher than the diagnosis done for doctors.
