ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe the demographic and clinico-pathological characteristics of salivary gland tumors diagnosed in the population of Sinaloa. Material and methods: This is a descriptive, retrospective, and cross-sectional study. All cases diagnosed as salivary gland tumors from January 2012 to December 2021 were included, from eight pathology services, including public and private laboratories of surgical pathology and oral pathology, in Culiacan, Sinaloa. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed, and the Chi-square test was used to analyze the relationship between variables, with SPSS v20. A p-value of ‹.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: A total of 147 cases were obtained. Of the 146 cases with recorded sex, 79 were women (54.1%) and 67 were men (45.9%), with a mean age of 57 ± 16 years, and an age range of 11 to 91 years. Sixteen histopathological subtypes were identified, with benign tumors being more frequent (n=103, 70.0%). Pleomorphic adenoma was the most common benign tumor (n=76, 51.7%) and mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most common malignant tumor (n=15, 10.2%). The most frequent location was the parotid gland (n=85, 70.08%). Regarding the histological type of the tumor and the anatomical location, a statistically significant difference was found between the groups (p=0.00). Conclusions: Salivary gland tumors are generally benign, show a preference for the female gender, occur most frequently in the fourth to seventh decades of life, and are most located in the parotid gland. Pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma are the most common benign and malignant tumors, respectively.
