ABSTRACT

Introduction: dental trauma is the second cause of pediatric dental care after caries; however, these are increasing considerably due to changes in modern life.
Objective: to characterize the behavior of dental trauma in children and adolescents of the Jovellanos municipality.
Methods: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out at the "Hermanos Almeida" Stomatological Clinic in the municipality of Jovellanos, Matanzas province, in the period between October 2017 and January 2020. The universe consisted of 112 patients; no sample was selected. Descriptive statistics were used.
Results: the predominant age group was 10 to 14 years old (41%) and the most affected sex was male (67%). The most frequent cause of trauma was the fall with 38 patients (33.9%). The most affected tooth was the upper left central incisor (33.3%). Uncomplicated crown fractures predominated in 53 teeth (43.1%), with the permanent dentition being the most compromised. Color change was the most frequent sequela (30.1%). The initiation of treatment prevailed in patients who presented uncomplicated fracture of the crown after 24 hours (36.5%).
Conclusions: male children, aged between 10 and 14 years, were the most affected by dental trauma. The upper left central incisor was the most compromised tooth. Most children with uncomplicated crown fractures did not receive immediate treatment.
