ABSTRACT

Introduction: The adipose tissue was considered a metabolic reservoir for storage and release of energy substrates. In the mid-eighties, this concept was modified, based on the identification of its role in sexual physiology through sex steroids. The topographic location of the adipose tissue is proposed to cause itself to have different metabolic profiles, which makes it susceptible to participate in the development of certain diseases. Objective: To carry out a literature review on the anatomy and physiology of the adipose tissue and its relevance for the treatment of obesity using body contouring techniques. Methods: The information search was carried out by consulting bibliographic resources such as the ScienceDirect, Scielo, Medline and Pubmed databases. All the articles that could be retrieved in full, published between 2000 and 2022, were reviewed; those considered relevant were selected. Conclusions: The evolution of the concept of adipose tissue to adipose organ has permitted to demonstrate that these cells present a series of roles and functions, until recently completely unknown for this tissue. These include energy homeostasis (lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, appetite control, thermogenesis), the immune activity, a reproductive function, hemostasis and angiogenesis.
