ABSTRACT

Purpose/Context: In the context of the current social and legal transformations regarding gender, the objective of the research is to explore and analyze the opinion and level of information that high school students have about the rights stipulated in the National Gender Identity Law No. 26743 and about progressive autonomy, from a bioethical point of view.
Methodology/Approach: An exploratory-descriptive, cross-sectional design was used with a mixed approach, with quantitative and qualitative data. As part of this, a purposive sample of 100 students between 17 and 18 years of age, from the cities of Necochea and Mar del Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina) was formed. The participants answered a survey specifically designed for this research, with open and closed questions, online.
Results/Findings: The results showed a low level of information on the Law and the principle of progressive autonomy, with the internet and social networks being the main source of information. Regarding the opinion on the rights stipulated in the Law and the principle of progressive autonomy, interest in this topic and a positive evaluation of its knowledge and teaching were observed.
Discussion/Conclusions/Contributions: These results raised questions about the role of the secondary school in the training on these issues and may contribute to improve educational strategies and policies on this relevant social issue. Likewise, the bioethical perspective offers elements for this, by problematizing naturalized cultural constructions on gender, and to think about this issue also in infancy in order to guarantee the best interests of children.
