An archaeological approach to the concept of justice in the discourses of Beauchamp and Childress

ABSTRACT

Purpose/Context: this article reviews the discourses of Beauchamp and Childress in two interviews and in eight editions of their book: Principles of Biomedical Ethics, as a reference in Bioethics, in order to understand how their discourses are configured and transformed around biomedical ethics and Bioethics, and then focus on justice.
Methodology/Approach: this research with hermeneutic approach is complemented with the archaeological method proposed by Foucault, to understand and identify changes in the discourses of Beauchamp and Childress, along the different editions around biomedical ethics, bioethics and justice.
Results/Findings: abuses in medical practice and research during the 20th century generate ruptures that give rise to biomedical ethics. The authors delimit biomedical ethics, bioethics and justice to the biomedical space. Justice throughout the issues includes different theories that broaden its perspective.
Discussion/Conclusions/Contributions: its contribution lies in comparing the different editions of the book and identifying changes in the discourses of the authors over time, which evidence ruptures and subtle transformations of events that allow understanding the meaning of biomedical ethics and exploring other visions of justice in bioethics.
