ABSTRACT

Introduction: in the Latin American region, palliative care (PC) has advanced in a heterogeneous manner according to the economic development, culture and idiosyncrasy of each country. Objective: identify the barriers and facilitators that determine providing palliative care in the Mexican Republic. Material and methods: a web survey was designed based on six indicators, it was applied for 11 months from January to December 2023, the data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, presenting the data in the Mexican Atlas of palliative care (PC) in the form of tables and figures and infograms by state. Results: 1,523 health workers identified the barriers that prevent timely provision of PC and participation of facilitators such as the presence of cultural and family values, a solid family support network, community participation, and staff interest in providing compassionate care. Conclusions: the progress achieved is insufficient to reverse the existing deficit in this area; however, we consider that eliminating barriers and strengthening existing facilitators will allow culturally sensitive palliative care to be provided to the numerous patients with non-curable diseases.
