ABSTRACT

Introduction: Nasal obstruction in children is frequently associated with rhinitis, adenoid hypertrophy or inferior turbinate hypertrophy. However, less common entities such as nasopharyngeal masses or benign tumors can also occur in the pediatric age group and should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Case Report: We present a case of exophytic papilloma in a 5-year-old patient with a challenging clinical diagnosis. The clinical, radiographic, and therapeutic characteristics of this lesion are discussed through a review of the current literature. Discussion: Severe upper airway obstruction in pediatric patients warrants a thorough endoscopic and radiologic study. Nasopharyngeal tumors are an uncommon cause of upper airway obstruction in children. Exophytic papilloma is a benign tumor of the nasal cavity, originating from the Schneiderian mucosa. It is known for its high recurrence rates when complete resection is not achieved. Its incidence is extremely low in children and there have been only a few case reports when originating from the nasopharynx. Conclusion: Sinonasal papilloma is a low-incidence tumor in children, but it still must be considered a rare cause of nasal obstruction. Therefore, patients must be correctly approached according to their presenting symptoms in order to perform appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic management.
