ABSTRACT

Objective: To inform our experience in the management of trauma patients in trauma-room at the Mexican Red Cross Central Hospital. Setting: Mexican Red Cross Central Hospital. Design: Retrospective and observational study. Patients and methods: We reviewed the clinical records of trauma patients at the Red Cross central Hospital from March 1990 to September 2001. the followin variables were analyzed: Mechanisms of lesion, gender and age, radiologic and special studies, elapsed time in the trauma room, morbidity and mortality. Results: 8741 patients were studied, the most common mechanism of trauma was that motor vehicle trauma, airway control without intubation, orotracheal intubation, hypovolemic shock treatment, neurologic management and different special studies (for example diagnostic peritoneal lavage) were analyzed. Conclusion: The ABC´s of the ATLS course are an accepted method for primary and second survey in trauma patients and diagnostic imaging plays a major role in the initial work-up of trauma and in the definitive treatment priorities for the patient with multiple trauma
