ABSTRACT

Introduction: dental anxiety as an exaggerated emotional response is presented as a contributing factor that affects oral health, the degree of intensity with which it is expressed is variable and the etiology is complex. Most studies show that it is dependent on gender and age. Objectives: to determine the level of dental anxiety in adult patients in private dental clinics and identify the triggering factors. Material and methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional and observational study was carried out with 100 individuals. The modified dental anxiety questionnaire (MDAS) was used. Results: 34% presented mild or no anxiety, 38% moderate, 13% high and 15% severe. Men reported a higher level of severe anxiety 60%, and there were significant differences. The 18 to 25 years old group had the highest values for high and severe anxiety. The situations that caused the most fear were surgical procedures. 39% do not go to the dental consultation due to financial problems and only 23% because of fear. Conclusions: men presented a higher level of anxiety, dental anxiety decreases with advancing age. The health professional must be prepared to identify and design strategies to prevent or reduce dental anxiety.
