ABSTRACT

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a system used to perform circulatory and respiratory assistance outside the body. It has very specific indications regarding its use and the parameters under which it should be applied, as well as a very strict international registry for its users. Therefore, its application is rare in Mexican hospitals. We present the case of a patient with H1N1 flu pneumonia, which progresses to respiratory distress and multi-organic failure, with complications such as pulmonary embolism and gastrointestinal bleeding. It is determined that the patient would benefit from ECMO, given its lack of response to other treatments. We start by describing and analyzing the case, assessing the criteria for ECMO and its outcomes, and showing the benefits of this therapy under the right circumstances.
