Development of a training system for vaginal delivery using augmented reality

ABSTRACT

Introduction: clinical competence in vaginal delivery is crucial for medical and obstetric students. Simulation, including augmented reality (AR), is a promising tool for acquiring these skills in a safe and controlled environment. Objectives: to create an AR-based training system for teaching vaginal delivery using a high-fidelity simulator. Material and methods: an AR system was designed using the Noelle birthing simulator in a simulated delivery room. Scenes were recorded in 360 degrees with GoPro cameras and integrated into an interactive environment. Students can access the training via internet-connected devices, interacting with focal points that provide information and assessments. Results: an immersive AR training system was developed, allowing students to practice vaginal delivery. Students completed the training in an average of 18 minutes, effectively interacting with the environment. Conclusions: this low-cost system facilitates access to high-fidelity simulation, enhancing obstetric education. Further development of similar systems for other gynecological and obstetric competencies is recommended.
