ABSTRACT
Introduction: early child development (ECD) influences a person's well-being throughout the course of life.
Objective: to examine the change in the prevalence of adequate ECD in a nationally representative sample of Mexican children aged 36 to 59 months, between 2015 and 2018.
Material and methods: ECD information was obtained from the National Survey of Boys, Girls, and Women (ENIM 2015, in Spanish) and the National Health and Nutrition Survey 2018 (ENSANUT 2018, in Spanish). Poisson regression models were used to estimate the percent of change.
Results: the percentage of Mexican children with adequate ECD decreased between 2015 and 2018 (82.2 and 80.4%, respectively). The prevalence of adequate ECD decreased in the group of beneficiaries of the PROSPERA program (–3.6%), and the most affected domain was literacy-numeracy.
Conclusions: in Mexico, the prevalence of adequate ECD decreased between 2015 and 2018. It is recommended to strengthen the evaluation of ECD, to review social programs and to explore the main reasons for the decreased of adequate ECD.
