ABSTRACT

Kidney transplant is currently considered the best treatment for patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease. For many decades, the open approach has been considered the standard treatment for receptor surgery. With the advent of robotic systems, new therapeutic options have been developed with the advantage of providing the benefits of minimally invasive surgery, not only in living donor nephrectomy, but also in recipient surgery. Robot-assisted kidney transplantation is a procedure that has emerged as a new therapeutic alternative with the intention of generating less morbidity for the patient and providing the advantages of robotic technology in complex scenarios, such as in patients with obesity, pediatric patients, and complex anatomies. In our country there are still important limitations to adopting this approach in kidney transplantation. The long learning curves, the limited availability of robotic systems, and the high costs of the procedure are barriers that hinder the adoption of the robotic approach in Mexico. Current evidence has shown that robot-assisted kidney transplantation offers functional results similar to the open approach, with the advantage of reducing perioperative morbidity.
