ABSTRACT

Introduction: delivering bad news is one of the biggest challenges that healthcare professionals constantly face, due to the impact it produces for both the professional and the patient, emotionally, socially and economically. When forwarding information, the professional requires skills such as empathy, communication and understanding, in order to create a more pleasant environment during the disease process. In addition, methodologies are required that allow the professional to provide bad news. Objective: to analyze the SPIKES methodology in the field of dentistry as a strategy applicable to patients with a guarded or unfavorable prognosis. Material and methods: a search was made of primary sources including theses and articles in the PubMed, Elsevier and SciELO databases, in the Spanish and English languages, published in the period 2014-2024. The keywords used were: SPIKES, bad news, communication and empathy. Results: after performing an exhaustive analysis, a limited amount of information sources were detected that include specific guidelines to help dental surgeons communicate bad news in the field of dentistry. Conclusions: the implementation of the SPIKES methodology strengthens the doctor-patient relationship, providing a more humane and compassionate approach in sensitive situations of clinical practice, making its implementation fundamental during the training of the dental surgeon.
