ABSTRACT

Introduction: pressure injuries have a prevalence of up to 59.2% and in 57% of critically ill patients with SARS-CoV-2 who required prone positioning. Objective: to identify the risk factors associated with developing pressure injuries in critically ill patients with SARS-CoV-2. Material and methods: an observational, descriptive, and retrospective cohort study was conducted with patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Hospital Angeles Mocel and Juárez in Mexico who tested positive for COVID-19 by PCR and required intubation and pronation between January 2020 and January 2022. Results: the incidence of pressure injury development was 40.1%, with the most frequent sites being facial areas such as the maxilla and forehead (60%), hands (40%), anterior chest (65%), and knees (71%). Conclusions: critically ill patients with SARS-CoV-2 have an increased risk of developing pressure injuries, with the main associated risk factors being hypoalbuminemia, positive fluid balance, and PaO2/FiO2 ratio.
