ABSTRACT

Objective. To compare the effectiveness of the cromolyn sodium-salbutamol in the prevention of asthma crisis due to acute respiratory tract infections.
Material and methods. Case-control study in 410 asthmatic children below than five years age were divided in a group of cases (219) treated with salbutamol and cromoly sodium and a control group (195) with beclomethasone.
Results. 70.6% of the cases group had 2.5/year crisis, while 54.3% of the control group had 3.2 crisis by year. The average duration of the crisis in the study group was of 50.7 hours and 58.6 hours in the control group. The asthma crisis were mild in 68.3% of children that received cromoly sodium and salbutamol, and in 61.6% of the those treated with beclomethasone. The 8.4% of the children of the group study and 12.2 of the controls were admitted in the hospital. Asthma crisis was presented each 1.8 episode of respiratory tract infection in the children of the group of cases and each 1.3 those in the control group.
Conclusions. The cromoly sodium-salbutamol seem to be a good option in the prevention of crisis of asthma exacerbation due to respiratory tract infections in the children below five years age.
