ABSTRACT

Scheuermann's disease (SD) is the second most common cause of hyperkyphosis after idiopathic scoliosis, and is also the second most common cause of back pain in adolescents. The incidence of Scheuermann's disease in the US is 0.4-8%, and it is most often first diagnosed in children between 10 and 12 years of age, with a positive correlation between age and kyphosis angle. In terms of sex, the male to female ratio varies between 2:1 and 7:1. The etiopathogenesis is multifactorial, having genetic, hormonal, biomechanical, and other aspects. Treatment may be conservative in certain cases, however, when this fails, surgical treatment may offer improvement. The purpose of this paper is to review the etiology of Scheuermann's disease, the relevant diagnostic methods, and current concepts related to its management.
