ABSTRACT
Introduction: neonatal resuscitation training has reduced morbidity and mortality among newborns. In Mexico, the Neonatal Resuscitation course has been mandatory for healthcare personnel since 2002 and is valid for three years. The objective of the study was to evaluate the knowledge and skills of health personnel who care for RN, after having accredited at least one resuscitation course.
Material and methods: an observational, comparative, prospective study was conducted in Mexico City in 2023. Pediatricians, neonatologists, residents, and nurses attending a pediatrics conference were included. The evaluation was conducted by qualified instructors at simulation stations set up with newborn mannequins.
Results: a total of 227 participants were evaluated. Forty-four percent were certified; this group obtained significantly more correct answers. Only 27% correctly completed all five items for the positive airway pressure ventilation procedure, while 29.1% correctly performed all five aspects of chest compressions.
Conclusion: healthcare personnel who maintain current certification perform neonatal resuscitation appropriately. These results highlight the importance of regular training.
