ABSTRACT

Introduction: The vertebral butterfly malformation is a benign and infrequent condition caused by the lack of fusion of the anterior vertebral arch. This anomaly can be isolated or associated with other malformations. There are few publications, in the world, that deal with this malformation.
Objective: To report a case with a rare type of spinal malformation.
Case report: This is a female patient, 18 years old, with history of apparent health, who comes to the clinic for lumbosacral pain of three months of evolution. The tomographic study allowed to diagnose the spinal malformation in butterfly wings. The patient was treated conservatively with paravertebral ozone therapy and had a favorable evolution.
Conclusions: The coexistence of lumbar and radicular pain with butterfly vertebra in pediatric age is reported for the first time in Cuba. Although this type of vertebral malformation is usually detected incidentally, it can cause symptoms such as pain. It is important to know the radiographic characteristics of the butterfly vertebral malformation for its correct diagnosis and treatment.
