ABSTRACT
Introduction: Ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes are one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, showing a disproportionate burden in low-income countries. The incidence of these events and deaths related to them has increased in recent decades. Intraparenchymal cerebral hemorrhage is responsible for approximately 10-20% of cerebrovascular events. Objective: To determine the clinical characteristics of patients with intraparenchymal cerebral hemorrhage in a public hospital.
Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out at Dr. Francisco E. Moscoso Puello Hospital in the Dominican Republic. Fifty-five patients admitted to the intensive care unit with a diagnosis of intraparenchymal hemorrhagic cerebrovascular disease from January 1 to July 31, 2021 were selected. Measures of central tendency and dispersion were calculated for the quantitative variables, and absolute frequency and relative for qualitative variables.
Results: The male sex was the most affected (69.09%). The average age was 53.87 (14.12) years. Arterial hypertension was present in 92.73% of the patients, and 36.36% had history of alcoholism. The thalamus was the most affected structure (32.73%). The average Glasgow scale at admission to the intensive care unit was 12.7 (standard deviation 2.59). 92.73% of the hemorrhages were of primary origin. Extension to the ventricle was the most frequent complication (23.64%).
Conclusions: Intraparenchymal hemorrhagic cerebrovascular disease occurs more frequently in male patients between 51 and 60 years of age and with history of arterial hypertension. The most frequent location and complication are the thalamus and extension to the ventricle, respectively.
