Patient Dependence on Peritoneal Dialysis and its Association with Primary Caregiver Burden

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze the dependence of patients on peritoneal dialysis and its association with the burden of the primary caregiver. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional and analytical study. Non-probabilistic sampling type: the sample was calculated using the finite population formula, with a confidence level of 95%, probability of success of 80%, obtaining a sample of 186 patients on peritoneal dialysis and their primary caregivers. The Barthel index and the Zarit scale were applied to patients and primary caregivers, respectively. Results: 45% of the patients were independent, 38% showed moderate dependence, and 17% presented severe dependence. Regarding primary caregivers: 41% did not present burden, 22% mild burden and 37% intense burden. Women experienced greater burden compared to men. The time spent caring for the patient, the caregiver's relationship, occupation, and marital status all influence this burden. Conclusions: Patients on peritoneal dialysis require support from their caregivers, who often suffer a considerable burden. It is crucial to design care strategies for primary caregivers, with the aim of contributing to their well-being and ensuring comprehensive care.
