ABSTRACT

Background: tinea corporis is a common mycosis caused by dermatophytes, mainly by the genera Trichophyton, Microsporum, Epidermophyton and Nannizzia.
Patients and methods: an observational and retrospective study including patient’s records with suspected ringworm, referred to the mycology section at Dr. Manuel Gea González General Hospital, from 2013 to 2022.
Objective: to describe epidemiological, clinical and mycological features.
Results: tinea corporis was confirmed in 264 cases, and etiological agent was determined in 94. The affected regions were the torse (48.9%), lower limbs (31.9%), upper limbs (26.5%), face and neck (8.5%). Females were affected in 56.3%. The most impacted age group were adults between 36 and 64 years old. The etiological agents were T. rubrum (61.7%), T. tonsurans (13.8%), and M. canis (9.5%).
Conclusions: T. rubrum remains the most common causative agent in tinea corporis, mainly affecting females and in the torse.
