Microbiota modification and lesions associated with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

ABSTRACT

The human being is not an independent eukaryotic organism, but coexists in a dynamic equilibrium with a large number of microbes. These microorganisms and their genetic load inhabit both the surface and the interior of the human body, forming a single functioning organ known as the microbiota. Among the various microbiota that make up the human ecosystem, the oral microbiota is crucial to the health and physiology of the individual. This microbial community not only contributes to digestion and protection against pathogens, but also influences the overall functioning of the immune system and the prevention of various diseases. Leukemia represents a group of malignant diseases characterized by the infiltration of neoplastic cells into the bone marrow and blood. These cells come from the hematopoietic tissue and their altered presence interferes with the normal production of blood cells. Leukemias are classified as acute or chronic, and are subdivided according to the cell type involved, either lymphoid or myeloid. It is important to note that in certain pathological stages, alteration of the microbiome, particularly in the oral setting, could influence the development and progression of diseases such as leukemia, which highlights the importance of maintaining a balanced microbiome.
