ABSTRACT

Hepatomegaly is a clinical sign that is relatively frequently identified during the patient’s physical examination. It is rarely a causal finding; it is more likely that they seek medical evaluation due to abdominal symptoms and this finding may represent a sign of liver disease itself or be part of a syndromic complex of other systemic entities, with a great variability in pathophysiological, clinical, treatment and prognostic characteristics. They causes have a different frequency, so in children under 1 year of age it is common for them to describe infectious and metabolic processes. While in older children the infectious cause continues to predominate, followed by neoplastic diseases and storage diseases. The objective of the present review is to propose a diagnostic route for the health professional located at the first and second level of medical care, which allows him to assist in the timely identification and opt for the best treatment for the patient with hepatomegaly.
