Characterization and stability of Moringa oleifera seed oil originated in the Cuban industry

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Moringa oleifera is a plant with different uses in the food and pharmaceutical industries. One of the usable parts of the tree is the seed, due to its fatty acid profile in the oil.
Objective: To characterize the stability of the oil from Moringa oleifera. dry seeds.
Methods: The physicochemical characterization was carried out according to USP 35, 2012 and USP 40, 2017. The lipid profile was conducted by mass-coupled gas chromatography. The stability was measured through the gas chromatography method, duly validated, based on the separation of the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) from its eventual degradation products.
Results: The physicochemical parameters were consistent with what was stated in the literature. Oleic acid was found in a higher proportion in moringa oil. The stability study showed that there were no significant changes in any of the tested conditions, with parameters within the established limits for 12 months.
Conclusions: The physicochemical characterization was in the permissible range and the lipid evaluation showed that oleic fatty acid is the majority in the plant; and linoleic fatty acid, minor. The stability of the oil under the evaluated conditions proposes an expiration date of 12 months, packaged and stored under the same conditions of the study carried out.
