ABSTRACT

Introduction. Localized cutaneous leishmaniasis (LCL) is a zoonosis endemic in the Yucatan peninsula, where the main risk factor of infection is associated with entry into the sylvatic areas.
Case report. We report a case of LCL in a pediatric patient who presented cervical adenopathy after visiting endemic areas of the Yucatan peninsula. The lymphadenopathy, a sign not commonly associated with the disease in the region, caused the lack of timely diagnosis and long treatment regimen. Because of the atypic presentation, the Leishmania species was identified by PCR-RFLP. The lesion was caused by Leishmania (Leishmania) mexicana. The patient was successfully treated after the application of 30 intramuscular ampules of meglumine antimoniate.
Conclusion. The inclusion of lymphadenopathy to the LCL clinical picture caused by Leishmania (Leishmania) mexicana and the promotion of the disease among healthcare workers and the general population is suggested, because of the increasing epidemiological trend of the disease in the region.
