ABSTRACT
Introduction: some studies have shown an increase in the prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents, due to lifestyle changes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Objective: this study aims to identify the impact of social confinement due to COVID-19 on cardiovascular risk in adolescents with overweight or obesity.
Material and methods: a retrospective cohort study was conducted with adolescents seen in a pediatric endocrinology clinic between 2019 and September 2022. Changes in biochemical profile, blood pressure, and anthropometry were assessed. Wilcoxon and Fisher's exact tests were used to compare the pre- and post-lockdown periods.
Results: forty patients were included, with a median age of 11 years; 62.5% were male, and 60% had obesity. No significant changes were observed in z-score BMI or in blood pressure levels during follow-up. A reduction in blood glucose was observed, but there was an increase in total and LDL cholesterol, as well as in the proportion of patients with hypertriglyceridemia and metabolic syndrome. There was also an increase in cardiovascular risk, assessed by the Alustiza index.
Conclusion: social confinement due to COVID-19 increased cardiometabolic risk factors in adolescents with overweight or obesity.
