ABSTRACT
Introduction: malnutrition in patients admitted to the post-surgical intensive care unit is high, causing increased mortality. Objective: to evaluate the risk of malnutrition in patients admitted to a post-surgical intensive care unit. Methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in the intensive care unit of the National Center for Minimal Access Surgery, from January to December 2020. In a universe of 151 post-surgical patients. Nutritional variables (albumin, cholesterol, global lymphocyte count), presence of complications, use of mechanical ventilation, length of stay and status at discharge were studied and operationalized. The information was collected from the medical records. The chi-square test was used to evaluate the association between qualitative variables. The significance level was set at α=0.05. Results: 76.8% of the patients had some risk of malnutrition, only associated with the presence of complications, and the state at discharge. 22% of the patients had some type of complication, with a higher frequency in patients with moderate and severe risk. Four percent of the patients were discharged deceased with some risk of malnutrition. Of the patients with some risk of malnutrition, 6% required mechanical ventilation. The average length of stay was highest (36 days) in patients with moderate and severe risk of malnutrition. Conclusions: the risk of malnutrition of patients admitted to a post-surgical intensive care unit was evaluated with the Nutritional Control tool, which helped to make a timely diagnosis of malnutrition.REFERENCES
