Ocular allergy and allergic conjunctivitis

ABSTRACT

Introduction: allergy is the most common disorder of the immune system. Allergic diseases have increased considerably in all countries. Allergic involvement at the ocular level is frequent. Objective: to describe patients with ocular allergy and allergic conjunctivitis treated at the Ramón Pando Ferrer Cuban Ophthalmologic Institute. Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out from April to September 2021, with a universe of 50 patients who met the selection criteria. Variables were operationalized to meet the objective. The ethics of scientific research were complied with. The information was extracted from the medical records and the data processing was performed with Microsoft Excel. Tables were used to facilitate the communication of the results. Results:v female sex predominated, the most frequent age group was between 29 and 33 years old. The clinical manifestation was ocular pruritus, which was identified in all patients, followed by lacrimation, symptoms, conjunctival hyperemia and conjunctival secretions as clinical signs. According to the established diagnostic impression, a predominance of allergic conjunctivitis was observed followed by atopic keratoconjunctivitis. The associated ophthalmologic diseases in the patients studied, it was observed that most of them did not have any. Conclusions: patients with ocular allergy and allergic conjunctivitis attended at the Cuban Ophthalmologic Institute Ramón Pando Ferrer were described.
