Knowledge about oral health in the Basic Secondary School ''Jorge Arturo Vilaboy Viñas''

ABSTRACT

Introduction: adolescent development is a process of changes and transformations, which allows for personal and progressive enrichment, in delicate interaction with social entities in the environment. Objective: to identify knowledge about oral health in adolescents, from the "Jorge Arturo Vilaboy Viñas" Secondary School in the municipality of Habana Vieja from November to December 2019. Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out, in adolescents from the "Jorge Arturo Vilaboy Viñas" Secondary School, in Habana Vieja municipality from November to December 2019. From the universe of 458 ninth grade adolescents, was extracted a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 38 units of analysis, who gave their consent to participate in the study. Results: 57.8% of the sample studied only went to the dentist when they were in discomfort. Fifty-five percent and 23% of the sample gave importance to their teeth for chewing and aesthetics respectively. 47.4 % brushed four times a day, 80 % had onychophagia and 13.2 % had a smoking habit. Conclusions: knowledge about oral health was identified, in adolescents from the "Jorge Arturo Vilaboy Viña" Secondary School between November and December 2019. The presence of harmful and disfiguring habits in the adolescents studied is detrimental to the quality of life from the point of view of oral health.
