ABSTRACT

Introduction: tuberculosis is a preventable and curable disease. Although the incidence in Cuba is low, cases of the disease reported every year. Knowledge about tuberculosis is an essential tool to prevent it. Objective: to describe the knowledge about tuberculosis in third year students of the Faculty of Biology in 2019. Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. A survey administered to 290 students in the first years of the courses studied at the Faculty of Biology. Results: 65.9% of respondents acknowledged that it is an old disease. 51.4% said it was curable. As for the etiological agent, 56.6% of the students recognized that it is a disease caused by bacteria. More than 60% of the respondents recognize persistent cough, bloody sputum and fever as the main symptoms. 91.4% of the students know that a sick patient can transmit the disease when he/she coughs; 60% of the respondents recognized the elderly and children as the main vulnerable groups. More than 95 % expressed that the lungs are most likely to be affected. Conclusions: knowledge about tuberculosis among third-year students of the Faculty of Biology was described, part of the first steps to promote a prevention campaign against the disease. The students showed insufficient knowledge about risk groups, transmission and symptoms of the disease.
