Mucosal lesions in older adults with prostheses. ''Raúl González Sánchez'' Faculty. 2019 - 2020

ABSTRACT

Introduction: oral mucosal lesions associated with the use of stomatological prostheses in older adults are frequent, and are associated more with predisposing factors than with age-related processes. Objective: to identify the main oral mucosal lesions in older adults wearing dental prostheses in the prosthesis clinic of the Faculty of Stomatology in Havana. Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out between October 2019 and January 2020 in 132 patients aged 60 years and over with stomatological prostheses. Diagnosed with at least one oral lesion associated with the use of prostheses who attended the prosthesis service of this institution. Results: the mean age was 69.8 ± 5.3 years, and women accounted for 59.1%. A total of 44.7% were diabetic, 36.7% had inadequate oral hygiene and 18.9% had traumatic habits. The most frequent lesion was sub-prosthetic stomatitis in 37.1%, and 76.5% wore acrylic prostheses. A total of 78.8% reported wearing time of more than five years, biomechanical principles were correct in 75% and the occlusal vertical dimension was reduced in 50.7%. Conclusions: the main oral mucosal lesions were identified in older adults wearing dental prostheses in the prosthesis clinic of the Faculty of Stomatology in Havana. The most frequent pathology was sub prosthesis stomatitis in wearers of acrylic prostheses, of prolonged use and misaligned.
