ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe clinical evolution in patients with chronic kidney disease on treatment with hemodialysis
who develop sudden neurosensorial hearing loss posterior to the administration of four week doses of
intratympanic steroid, based on Siegel and Cheng criteria.
Materials and Methods: An observational, cohort, longitudinal, retrospective study was done in patients
with chronic kidney disease treated with hemodialysis and diagnosis of sudden hearing loss, from January 1st,
2022 to January 31st, 2023. Tonal audiometry was used for staging the patients based on the severity of hearing
loss. A second tonal audiometry was performed after treatment ended. Based on Siegel and Cheng’s criteria, it
was observed if improvement occurred, and the grade.
Results: Thirty-two patients were included. It was observed a recovery of hearing function in all patients of
the studied population, the gain was variable, and there were not infectious complications during the treatment
administration.
Conclusions: Intratympanic steroid is an effective treatment modality for patients who develop neurosensorial
sudden hearing loss in chronic kidney disease in treatment with hemodialysis. However, it is necessary to
make another study with a bigger population to improve the evidence level.
