ABSTRACT

Introduction: the procedural pain by vaccines in babies has negative physiological and behavioral effects. But there are strategies like breastfeeding to manage the pain. Objective: to assess the efficiency of breastfeeding for managing the pain and side effects during the vaccination in children under one year. Material and methods: a mixed approach study of sequential explanatory type; an exploratory quantitative cross-sectional study was held in the health center during 2021 in 55 mother-child binomials: 39 breastfed babies and 16 babies who use substitutes at two, four and six months of age with up-to-date vaccination schedule were selected for consecutive cases. The measurement of pain was performed with the FLACC scale. The data was analyzed through descriptive statistical methods and inference through STATA version 18. In the qualitative study, 37 women were interviewed by telephone, where they were asked about their experience in vaccination with breastfeeding and the side effects of vaccination. The data analysis was performed by content. Results: the 61.82% of babies who breastfed while vaccinated had no pain, the 97.3% had no persistent crying and the 97.3% did not develop fever. Breastfeeding proved to be protective against these factors (p ≤ 0.001). In the qualitative study it was identified that women feel safety and relief. Conclusions: breastfeeding has a positive effect on pain, crying and fever during vaccination. It is reaffirmed that it is a procedure that must be disseminated.
