Simulation in airway management: a review of its impact on clinical training

ABSTRACT

Introduction: airway management is a critical skill in anesthesiology and other specialties. Simulation has become an ethical and effective tool for its instruction. Objective: to analyze the role of simulation in acquiring both technical and non-technical skills for airway management. Development: this review explores the historical background of simulation, the types of simulators, and their use in specific airway techniques including manual ventilation, laryngoscopy, video laryngoscopy, supraglottic devices, surgical airways, and bronchoscopy. It also addresses its value in deliberate practice, skill retention, and training in human factors. Conclusions: simulation is an essential educational strategy for the safe instruction of airway management. Its implementation must be supported by structured methodology and trained facilitators to ensure effective translation to clinical practice.
