ABSTRACT
Introduction: hemorrhoidal disease is one of the most common proctologic disorders, with the highest incidence between 45 and 65 years of age. Conservative measures are preferred as initial treatment and, in refractory cases, outpatient treatments; the most commonly used are infrared photocoagulation, sclerotherapy, and hemorrhoidal ligation with silicone bands.
Objective: to analyze the effectiveness of hemorrhoidal ligation with silicone bands as a non-surgical treatment for uncomplicated grade I-III hemorrhoidal disease.
Material and methods: a retrospective study between November 2021 and November 2022 included information on patients treated with hemorrhoidal ligation with silicone bands by the same colorectal surgeon at a tertiary care center.
Results: we studied 175 patients, mostly men aged 18 to 92. The median time with symptoms was six months, with bleeding being the most frequent symptom. 90.85% of the patients had no complications.
Conclusions: hemorrhoidal ligation is a simple, low-cost outpatient treatment with an excellent success rate and low complication rate. Therefore, it should be considered for refractory patients to outpatient treatment.
