ABSTRACT

Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) is manifested by psychological, neurological and endocrinological mechanisms. BMS does not only impact patients' physical health, but it can also have significant repercussions on their emotional well-being and quality of life. The identification and understanding of these factors are crucial for the development of effective management strategies that address the symptoms and underlying causes of this syndrome. In this article, the SBA pathology is described under the dental view and the aspects that are known about this condition are reviewed. A search was carried out in the ClinicalKey, Scopus, PubMed and Google Scholar databases using the keywords “burning mouth”, “orofacial pain”, “anxiety and depression related to burning mouth syndrome”. Those articles published in the last 10 years were considered, thus guaranteeing the relevance and timeliness of the information collected. BMS is considered a “hidden enemy” due to its complex management and the variety of its symptoms. This condition is often underestimated, underscoring the need for a comprehensive approach and greater awareness among health professionals. BMS is a complex disorder that involves neurological alterations (neuropeptide transmission and sensitization of nociceptive neurons) and endocrinological alterations (changes in estrogen and alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis); these mechanisms interact, affecting pain regulation. Its specialized approach is crucial for effective diagnosis and treatment.
